Distribution:  This species occurs along the coastal regions of California in both northern and southern California.

Legal Status:  This subspecies is not included on the California Department of Fish and Game's Special Animals List, which normally indicates that there are no significant conservation concerns for it in California, but populations along the coastal plain from Ventura County southward to San Diego County are listed as a separate subspecies by the Special Animals List asThamnophis sirtalis ssp. - South Coast Garter Snake, with the status shown as being a Species of Special Interest, which results in some degree of consfusion.
