Hans F. Koenig Award for Excellence in Herpetological Photography

During January of each year, the SWCHR calls for entries for the Hans F. Koenig Award for Excellence in Herpetological Photography competition. This competition is open only to SWCHR Members. Non-members may enter the competition upon receipt of their membership application and dues. Each year’s winning photographic image will be displayed HERE on the SWCHR website, and will grace the cover of the next four quarterly editions of the SWCHR Bulletin for the year. The distinguished photographer also receives a cash award of $100 along with a certificate commemorating his or her achievement.

Entrants may enter up to 3 photographs

All entries must be received no later than January 31 of each year.

Photographs must be emailed to info@southwesternherp.com. A confirmation email will be sent when photos are successfully received.

Each photograph entered must include the species name, county and state where the photo was taken, and the date the photo was taken. Preference is given to photos taken within the past year of the competition.

The subject species of the photo must be an animal occurring naturally in the six-state SWCHR region of interest (AZ, CA, NM, NV, TX, UT). While we do support research on introduced species, the intent of this award is to showcase native species.

Captive specimens may be used as subjects but must be photographed in a natural setting.

Criteria for the judging include the following:
> Choice of subject matter
> Originality and creativity
> Viewer impact and appeal
> Composition
> Appropriate use / control of light and shadow
> Overall sharpness of the image and appropriate use of depth-of-field

The winning entry will be announced in February.

The winning photographer agrees to the use of their winning photograph on the SWCHR website, and in the SWCHR Bulletin and other SWCHR publications and materials.
