DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Lampropeltis alterna occurs only in the Trans-Pecos Region of Texas and from Eddy County and possibly Otero County in New Mexico. There have been fewer than a half dozen verified specimens from New Mexico.
LEGAL STATUS: Lampropeltis alterna is listed as a Threatened Species in the state of New Mexico.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Lampropeltis alterna (Brown – 1901)
Genus: Lampropeltis, Greek – lampros = shining, beautiful + pelta = small shield – ref. smooth shiny dorsal scales typical of the genus
Species: alterna, Latin = alternate – ref. variations in the colors and patterns of the species
