Blotched Water Snake
Nerodia erythrogaster transversa

DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Nerodia e. transversa occurs throughout much of southeast, central and north Texas, including the Panhandle Region. Moving westward it also occurs in the Trans-Pecos Region of Texas. There are old records of it occurring in southeastern New Mexico along the Rio Grande River, but there is some question as to if the species still occurs in New Mexico today.

LEGAL STATUS: The state of New Mexico lists Nerodia e. transversa as an Endangered Species. In Texas, the species is not protected.
