DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Nerodia paucimaculata occurs only in the Colorado-Concho watershed as it exits the Brazos River drainage in central Texas.
LEGAL STATUS: Nerodia paucimaculata, formerly classified as a subspecies of N. harteri, is a Threatened species in the State of Texas.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Nerodia harteri (Tinkle & Conant – 1961)
Genus: Nerodia, Greek – honors Nereis, a Greek sea nymph
Species: paucimaculata, Latin – paucis = few + maculata = spotted – ref. reduced spotting on venter
