State and Federally Protected Species
Below are links to state listings of all herpetological taxa that are classified as threatened, endangered, or otherwise protected by either the state or the federal government. Many species that do not appear on these lists are protected only in specific state counties, geographical regions or habitats.
Please bear in mind that some of the state lists may not reflect current taxonomic standings and some may not recognize subspecies. We have listed each taxon as it is listed in the law or by the administrative order that protects it.
This information is not legal advice and may not be currently accurate as state fish and game laws can change at any time. It is the responsibility of the individual to understand and follow the laws of each state, which includes the procurement of the proper permits required in each state to conduct any and all field herping activities.
