California Red-sided Gartersnake
Thamnophis sirtalis infernalis
DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Thamnophis s. infernalis occurs along the Pacific Coast of California from the Oregon border to San Diego County.
LEGAL STATUS: Thamnophis s. infernalis is not included on the California Department of Fish and Game’s Special Animals List, which normally indicates that there are no significant conservation concerns for it in California, but populations along the coastal plain from Ventura County southward to San Diego County are listed as a separate subspecies by the Special Animals List as Thamnophis sirtalis ssp. – South Coast Garter Snake, with the status shown as being a Species of Special Concern, which results in some degree of confusion.
