MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Graptemys pseudographica kohnii (Baur – 1893)
Genus: Graptemys , Greek – graptos = inscribed, written, engraved + emys = a freshwater tortoise – pos. ref. markings on upper shell, which resemble topographic maps
Species: pseudographica, Greek – pseudo = false, deceptive + geographica = resembling map or sailing chart – indicates that this is not Graptemys geographica with which it was apparently confused
Subspecies: kohnii, honors Joseph Gustav Kohn
