DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Lichanura t. roseofusca occurs in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego Counties of southern California.
LEGAL STATUS: Lichanura trivirgata is protected in Nevada
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Lichanura trivirgata roseofusca (Cope – 1868)
Genus: Lichanura, Greek – lichanos = fore-finger + oura = tail – poss. reference to the stubby tail resembling a finger
Species: trivirgata, Latin – tri = three + virgatus = striped
Subspecies: roseofusca, Latin – rose = red like a rose, ruddy + fusca = dusky
