DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Lampropeltis p. pyromelana occurs in Arizona and New Mexico above the Mogollan Rim and in adjacent Utah and Nevada.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Lampropeltis pyromelana pyromelana (Cope- 1867)
Genus: Lampropeltis, Greek – lampros = shining, beautiful + pelta = small shield – ref. smooth shiny dorsal scales typical of the genus
Species/Subspecies: pyromelana, Greek – pyrrh= flame colored + melaina = black
