DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Masticophis f. cingulum occurs in southeastern Arizona.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Masticophis flagellum cingulum (Lowe & Woodin – 1954)
Genus: Masticophis, Greek – mastix = whip + ophis = snake, serpent
Species: flagellum, Latin = whip – ref. braided appearance of the tail
Subspecies: cingulum, Latin = collar or girdle – ref. light band crossing the nape of the neck
