DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Masticophis f. lineatulus occurs in extreme southeastern Arizona, southern New Mexico and extreme western Texas.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Masticophis flagellum lineatulus (Smith – 1941)
Genus: Masticophis, Greek – mastix = whip + ophis = snake, serpent
Species: flagellum, Latin = whip – ref. braided appearance of the tail
Subspecies: lineatulus, Latin – lineatus = lined + ulus = litle – ref. faint longitudinal stripes
