DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Masticophis f. piceus occurs in the coastal region of southern California and in the desert regions of Arizona, California, southern and western Nevada and southern Utah.

Genus: Masticophis, Greek – mastix = whip + ophis = snake, serpent
Species: flagellum, Latin = whip – ref. braided appearance of the tail
Subspecies: piceus, Latin = pitch black – poss. ref. black morph of subspecies
