DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Thamnophis c. cyrtopsis occurs from the Trans-Pecos region of Texas westward throughout much of New Mexico, southeastern Arizona and in southeastern Utah. In addition, there are several small isolated populations in western Arizona.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Thamnophis cyrtopsis cyrtopsis (Kennicott – 1860)
Genus: Thamnophis, Greek – thamnos = shrub or bush + ophis = snake, serpent
Species/ Subspecies: cyrtopsis, Greek – cyrto = curved + opsis = having the appearance of – ref. posterior curvature of black nuchal splotches
