DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Crotalus o. lutosus occurs in most of the state of Nevada, northeastern California, western Utah and extreme northwestern Arizona north of the Grand Canyon.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Crotalus oreganus lutosus (Klauber – 1936)
Genus: Crotalus, Greek – krotalon = a rattle ref. rattle on tail
Species: oreganus, Latin – oregano = belonging to the state of Oregon – pos. ref. to locality of type specimen
Subspecies: lutosus, Latin = muddy, full of mud – pos. ref. brownish dorsal color
