DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Elgaria m. webbii occurs in coastal California from the Mexican border east into the Peninsular and Transverse Mountain ranges, and northward into the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Elgaria multicarinata webbii (Baird – 1858)
Genus: Elgaria, Obscure – possibly named after the Old English name “Elgar” meaning “elf spear” or “elf warrior” – pos. ref. to spear-shaped head of the genus
Species: multicarinata, Latin – multi = many + carinata = keeled
Subspecies: webbii, honors Thomas H. Webb
