DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Coleonyx v. abbotti occurs in southern California central San Diego County from the Mexican border to western Riverside County where it intergrades with C. v. variegatus.
LEGAL STATUS: Coleonyx v. abbotti is protected in California as a Species of Special Concern.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Coleonyx variegatus abbotti (Klauber 1945)
Genus: Coleonyx, Greek – koleos = sheath + onyx = talon or claw – ref. sheathed claws
Species: variegatus, Latin = of different colors – ref. contrasting elements of color pattern
Subspecies: abbotti, honors Clinton G. Abbott
