DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Callisaurus d. rhodostictus occurs in the deserts of southeastern California, eastern and southern Nevada and western Arizona.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Callisaurus draconoides rhodostictus (Cope – 1896)
Genus: Callisaurus, Greek – kalos = beautiful + saurus = lizard
Species: draconoides , Greek – draco = dragon + oides = similar to – “les especes de veritables dragons” (trans) the species of true dragons
Subspecies: rhodostictus, Greek – rhodon = red, rose colored + stiktos = spotted, dappled
