DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Plestiodon obsoletus occurs across the western 2/3 of Texas, much of New Mexico and into central and eastern Arizona.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Plestiodon  obsoletus (Baird & Girard – 1852)
Genus: PlestiodonGreek – plestios = many + odon = tooth or teeth
Species: obsoletus,  Latin = worn out or shabby — ref. absence of dorsal lines, otherwise characteristic of N. American skinks
