DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Aspidoscelis i. heptagrammus occurs in extreme southern New Mexico and southward throughout the Trans-Pecos region of Texas.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Aspidoscelis inornata heptagrammus (Axtell – 1961)
Genus: Aspidoscelis, Greek – aspido = shield + scelis (skelos) = leg – pos. ref. large shield-like scales on legs
Species: inornata, Latin – inornatus = without ornament — ref. lack of spots between stripes
Subspecies: heptagrammus, Greek – hepta = seven + gramme = mark, letter, writing — ref. number of dorsal lines
