Genus: Aspidoscelis, Greek – aspido = shield + scelis (skelos) = leg – pos. ref. large shield-like scales on legs
Species: sexlineata, Latin – sex = six + lineatus = lined — ref. six longitudinal stripes on dorsum
Subspecies: stephensae, honors Hazel J. Stephens
