DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Bufo (Anaxyrus) b. boreas occurs in extreme northern California, throughout Nevada and the western 2/3 of Utah. There is also an isolated population in extreme northern New Mexico.
LEGAL STATUS: Bufo (Anaxyrus) b. boreas is protected and listed as Endangered in the state of New Mexico.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Bufo (Anaxyrus) boreas boreas (Baird & Girard – 1852)
Genus: Bufo, Latin = toad – toads have been known as bufo since ancient times
Genus 2: Anaxyrus – Greek = a chief, a leader
Species/Subspecies: boreas, Greek – boreal = northern – ref. to the northern distribution of the species
