DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Bufo (Incilius) alvarius occurs in southwestern New Mexico, southern Arizona and possibly extreme southeastern California.

LEGAL STATUS: Bufo (Incilius) alvarius is protected in California where it is possibly extinct.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Bufo (Incilius) alvarius   (Girard – 1859)
Genus: BufoLatin = toad –  toads have been known as bufo since ancient times
Genus 2: Incilius – Latin – incile = inlet, rivulet, bog + –ius = a suffix used to form adjectives from nouns
Species: alvarius, Latin – alvus = the womb or belly + –arius = belonging to
