DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Pseudacris h. curta occurs in coastal and central California and southern Nevada. There are a few isolated populations in southeastern California, and the species inhabits both Santa Catalina and Santa Cruz Islands off the coast of southern California.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Pseudacris hypochondriaca curta (Hallowell – 1854)
Genus: Pseudacris, Greek – pseudes = false, deceptive + akris = locust — means “false Acris” with ref. to genus Acris
Species: hypochondriaca, Greek – hypo = under, beneath + chondros = a grain, something granular, grit + aca = belonging to – pos. ref. granular tubercles on the underside of the hind legs and belly
Subspecies: curta, Latin – curtus = short, shortened
