DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Smilisca baudinii occurs only in Cameron and Hidalgo Counties of Texas, adjacent to the Mexican border. There are two very old and questionable records from Refugio County and Bexar County, Texas, which if correct probably represent accidental introductions.
LEGAL STATUS: Smilisca baudinii is listed as a Threatened Species by the state of Texas.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Smilisca baudinii (Dumeril and Bibron – 1841)
Genus: Smilisca, Greek – smiliskos = little knife — ref. sharp pointed frontoparietal processes
Species: baudinii, honors Nicholas Baudin
