DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Lithobates chiricahuensis occurs in southwestern New Mexico and in central and southeastern Arizona.
LEGAL STATUS: Lithobates chiricahuensis is listed as a Threatened Species under the Federal Endangered Species Act and is therefore protected throughout its range. The Arizona Game and Fish Department has been involved in an effort to reintroduce the species into its native habitat in southeast Arizona for a number of years.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Lithobates chiricahuensis (Platz and Mecham – 1979)
Genus: Lithobates, Greek – lithos = stone + bates = one that treads or climbs – ref. one that treads on rock or climbs rocks
Species: chiricahuensis, Latin – belongs to the Chiricahua Mountains, AZ — ref. type locality, 1971
