DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Rana pretiosa occurs in extreme northeastern California.
LEGAL STATUS: Rana pretiosa is protected in California as a Species of Special Concern and is listed as Threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA).
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Rana pretiosa (Baird and Girard, 1853)
Genus: Rana , Latin = frog — “Rana” probably mimics how the Romans heard their call.
Species: pretiosa, Latin = to be prized or worth the effort — may refer to vivid adult coloration
