LEGAL STATUS: All species of Batrachoseps are protected with the exception of Batrachoseps attenuatus and Batrachoseps major major.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Batrachoseps nigriventris (Cope, 1869)
Genus: Batrachoseps, Greek – batrachos = amphibian, frog + seps = a kind of lizard — describes lizard-like appearance
Species: nigriventris, Latin = niger = black + ventris = of the belly — ref. dark venter
