LEGAL STATUS: All species of Batrachoseps are protected with the exception of Batrachoseps attenuatus and Batrachoseps major major.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Batrachoseps pacificus (Cope, 1865)
Genus: Batrachoseps, Greek – batrachos = amphibian, frog + seps = a kind of lizard — describes lizard-like appearance
Species: pacificus, Latin = of the Pacific Ocean — found on Northern Channel Islands, off CA coast
