DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Ensatina e. croceater occurs only in California in the lower Kern River Canyon, the Paiute Mountains, Breckenridge Mountain, and the Tehachapi mountains.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Ensatina eschscholtzii croceater (Cope, 1869)
Genus: Ensatina, Latin – ensatus = sword shaped + –ina = similar to — poss. ref. to the teeth
Species: eschscholtzii, honors Johann F. Eschscholtz
Subspecies: croceater, Latin – croceus = saffron colored + –ater = black — ref. color pattern
