DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Eurycea nana occurs in the headwaters of the San Marcos River in Hays County Texas.
LEGAL STATUS: Eurycea nana is listed by the State of Texas as a Threatened Species.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Eurycea nana (Bishop, 1941)
Genus: Eurycea, probably honors Eurydice — although Rafinesque only wrote “Mythological” (Greek) – Eurydice was the wife of Orpheus.
Species: nana, Greek –nanos = dwarf or Latin – nanus = dwarf – ref. small size
