DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Taricha t. torosa occurs along the coast of California in the coastal mountains from Mendocino County to San Diego County.
LEGAL STATUS: Taricha t. torosa is a protected species in California as a Species of Special Concern.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Taricha torosa torosa (Rathke in Eschscholtz, 1833)
Genus: Taricha, Greek – tarichos = preserved mummy — poss. ref. rough skinned appearance
Species/Subspecies: torosa, Latin = full of muscle, fleshy — ref. thicker head and body
