DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Graptemys caglei occurs only in the San Antonio and Guadalupe River systems of south-central Texas.
LEGAL STATUS: Graptemys caglei is listed by the State of Texas as Threatened. Federal protection is under consideration.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Graptemys caglei (Haynes & McKown – 1974)
Genus: Graptemys , Greek – graptos = inscribed, written, engraved + emys = a freshwater tortoise – pos. ref. markings on upper shell, which resemble topographic maps
