DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Agkistrodon c. contortrix occurs throughout east and southeastern Texas. It intergrades with the Broad-Banded Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix laticinctus) along the western edge of its range.

Genus: Agkistrodon, Greek – ankistron = hook + odontos = tooth – ref. curved fangs
Species/Subspecies: contortrix, Latin – contortus = full of turns, twisted + trix = agent or doer of an action – pos. ref. curved body markings, or “like a contortionist” ref. to body movements or condition of type specimen
