DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Agkistrodon c. laticinctus occurs throughout central and northcentral Texas extending southward to the Texas coast. Along the eastern edge of its range this species intergrades with the Southern Copperhead. Along the western edge of its range it intergrades with the Trans-Pecos Copperhead.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Agkistrodon contortrix laticinctus (Gloyd & Conant – 1934)
Genus: Agkistrodon, Greek – ankistron = hook + odontos = tooth – ref. curved fangs
Species: contortrix, Latin – contortus = full of turns, twisted + trix = agent or doer of an action – pos. ref. curved body markings, or “like a contortionist” ref. to body movements or condition of type specimen
Subspecies: laticinctus, Latin – latus = side , flank + cinctus = banded
