DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Agkistrodon p. leucostoma occurs throughout the eastern portion of Texas and as far west as Irion and Sterling Counties.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Agkistrodon piscivorus leucostoma (Troost – 1836)
Genus: Agkistrodon, Greek – ankistron = hook + odontos = tooth – ref. curved fangs
Species: piscivorus, Latin – piscis = fish + voros = to devour – ref. to fish eating habits of species
Subspecies: leucostoma, Greek – leukon = white + stoma = mouth – ref. to white color of mouth lining
