Arboreal Salamander
Aneides lugubris

 

DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Aneides lugubris occurs along the California coast and coasg ranges from Humboldt County south to the Mexican border, and in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains from El Dorado County to Madera County. The species is also found on several southern California islands including, Santa Catalina Island, the Farallon Islands and Ano Nuevo Island.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Aneides lugubris (Hallowell, 1849)
Genus: AneidesGreek – an = lacking + eidos = form or shape — Jaeger – Greek – aneidos, = “shapeless” – Baird spelled it “Anaides.”
Species: lugubris, Latin = gloomy, dark — poss. ref. dull coloration or ironic ref.
