DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Aspidoscelis dixonii occurs in two isolated populations in our region – one in Peloncillo Mountains of southwestern Hidalgo County, NM, and the other in Presidio County, TX.
LEGAL STATUS: Aspidoscelis dixonii is protected in New Mexico.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Aspidoscelis dixonii (Scudday – 1973)
Genus: Aspidoscelis, Greek – aspido = shield + scelis (skelos) = leg – pos. ref. large shield-like scales on legs
