DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Aspidoscelis exsanguis occurs in southeastern Arizona, central and southern New Mexico and west Texas.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Aspidoscelis exsanguis (Lowe – 1956)
Genus: Aspidoscelis, Greek – aspido = shield + scelis (skelos) = leg – pos. ref. large shield-like scales on legs
Species: exsanguis, Latin – ex = comparable to + sanguis = (its) family — ref. distinctive difference from other whiptails with which it was formerly included
