DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Bufo (Anaxyrus) californicus occurs only in southwestern California.
LEGAL STATUS: Bufo (Anaxyrus) californicus is protected in California as a Species of Special Concern and listed as Threatened under the U. S. Endangered Species Act (ESA).
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Bufo (Anaxyrus) californicus (Camp – 1915)
Genus: Bufo, Latin = toad – toads have been known as bufo since ancient times
Genus 2: Anaxyrus – Greek = a chief, a leader
