DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Bufo (Anaxyrus) houstonensis occurs only in eastern Texas in portions of Austin, Bastrop, Burleson, Colorado, Lee, Leon, Lavaca, Milam and Robertson counties.
LEGAL STATUS: Bufo (Anaxyrus) houstonensis is protected in the state of Texas as a Threatened Species.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Bufo (Anaxyrus) houstonensis (Sanders – 1953)
Genus: Bufo, Latin = toad – toads have been known as bufo since ancient times
Genus 2: Anaxyrus – Greek = a chief, a leader
Species: houstonensis, belongs to Houston — holotype collected in Houston, TX, l952
