DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Cemophora c. copei occurs in extreme eastern Texas
LEGAL STATUS: Cemophora c. copei is protected in the state of Texas as a Threatened species.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Cemophora coccinea copei (Jan – 1863)
Genus: Cemophora, Greek – kemos = muzzle + phoros = bearing — ref. pronounced rostral scale
Species: coccinea, Latin – coccineus + scarlet, red like a berry
Subspecies: copei, honors Edward Drinker Cope
