DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Chrysemys dorsalis occurs in extreme northwestern Texas.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Chrysemys dorsalis (Agassiz – 1857)
Genus: Chrysemys, Greek – khrysos = golden, yellow or light green + emys = a freshwater tortoise – prob. ref. yellow stripes on head of all members of this genus
Species: dorsalis, Latin = pertaining to the back – pos. ref. to the dorsal stripe
