DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Coluber c. flaventris occurs in central and northern Texas, and in northern New Mexico. There are a few isolated populations in central New Mexico

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Coluber constrictor flaviventris (Say- 1823)
Genus: Coluber, Latin = snake, serpent
Species: constrictor, Latin = one that constricts – misnomer, this genus does not constrict
Subspecies: flaviventris, Latin – flavi = yellow + ventris = of the belly
