DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Coluber c. mormon occurs in coastal southern California including Santa Cruz Island, central and northern California and northern Nevada.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Coluber constrictor mormon (Baird & Gerard – 1852)
Genus: Coluber, Latin = snake, serpent
Species: constrictor, Latin = one that constricts – misnomer, this genus does not constrict
Subspecies: mormon, “found by Capt. Howard Stansbury’s party, in the valley of the Great Salt Lake” settled by Mormon religionists
