DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Cophosaurus t. scitulus occurs in central and southeastern Arizona, southern New Mexico and west Texas.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Cophosaurus texanus scitulus (Peters – 1951)
Genus: Cophosaurus Greek – kophos = deaf + saurus = lizard
Species: texanus, Latin = belonging to the state of Texas
Subspecies: scitulus, Latin = neat, beautiful
