Genus: Craugastor, Greek – krauros = hard, brittle + gaster = belly or stomach
Species: augusti, honors Auguste Dumeril
Subspecies: cactorum: Latin – kaktos = prickly plant + –orum of the — ref. type specimen collected in a cactus patch
