DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Crotalus o. abyssus occurs in and above the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
LEGAL STATUS: Crotalus o. abyssus is protected within the boundaries of the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Crotalus oreganus abyssus (Klauber – 1930)
Genus: Crotalus, Greek – krotalon = a rattle ref. rattle on tail
Species: oreganus, Latin – oregano = belonging to the state of Oregon – pos. ref. to locality of type specimen
Subspecies: abyssus, Greek – abyssos = bottomless – ref. to Grand Canyon, AZ habitat
