DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Diadophis p. amabilis occurs in coastal California from north of the San Francisco Bay area of Sonoma County, south to the Monterey Bay area.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Diadophis punctatus amabilis (Baird & Gerard – 1853)
Genus: Diadophis, Latin – diadoma = crown + Greek – ophis = snake, serpent
Species: punctatus, Latin – punctat = dotted, spotted as with punctures – ref. to spotted belly of the species
Subspecies: amabilis, Latin = lovely
