DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Elgaria m. multicarinata occurs in coastal central California and eastward into the northern end of the Central Valley and into the northern Sierra Nevada Mountains.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Elgaria multicarinata multicarinata (Blainville – 1835)
Genus: Elgaria, Obscure – possibly named after the Old English name “Elgar” meaning “elf spear” or “elf warrior” – pos. ref. to spear-shaped head of the genus
Species/Subspecies: multicarinata, Latin – multi = many + carinata = keeled
